UDMA cables have color coded connections which require proper orientation when connecting. After I restore from an image XP pro works flawlessly until the error reappears. Checked the hard drive and cable, and it would seem the hard drive has died after all. i have been pulling my hair out with the same problem. also I did a change in the bios I changed the sata controller from ACHI TO ATA. I suspect there may be a registry error, but wouldn't know where to start looking for one. My "disk read error" limbo went away (at least for for now) after shuffeling the order of the hard drives around in the bios. Also head hysteresis tests can't find anything mechanically bad. What can I do? I tried changing every BIOS setting I could, no success.
