A uni-directional connection limits the printer to accept commands from the computer or to self-check and send information to the computer, but not both at any given time. Doing so gives the printer some extra buffer resources that are usually withheld for status checking, error reporting and other communications purposes. Oddly, it still prints (I also have an MX882).
